Friends of Bleecker Playground is a volunteer group dedicated to making Bleecker Playground and the adjoining plaza a clean, green, and safe center of community life for the families and residents of the West Village. Our core
group of volunteers is made up of West Village families who want to
create and maintain a sense of community with Bleecker Playground at the
heart of it.
Friends of Bleecker Playground has worked hard, here are a few of our accomplishments: Annual Family Events
Revived the West Village Halloween Festival
Organized the Holiday Tree Lighting
Established a Spring Family Day
Organized free musical park performances
Sponsored a New Parent Breakfast
Park Improvements
Replaced sand in the sand box
Got additional trash pick-ups during summer months
Added safety signs
Reestablished the garden area around the sand box
Got a new tree planted by the swings
Fund Raising
Received a $400,000 grant from Speaker Quinn's office for bathroom renovations (beginning Fall 2009)
Raised private funds to reestablish the garden area around the sand pit, dedicated as "Grandma's Garden"
Year round fund raising for operating costs (includes all of the previously listed events and more...)
Future Projects
Clean and refurbish the anti-slip safety paint on the play structures (say no to chipped teeth!)
Establish private maintenance - for additional garbage and sand clean-up
Replace or refurbish the buckling-play-structure-safety-padding
Continue to periodically replace sand
Maintain the garden area, adding monthly rodent control, if necessary
