ABOUT US

Friends of Bleecker Playground is a volunteer group dedicated to making Bleecker Playground and the adjoining plaza a clean, green, and safe center of community life for the families and residents of the West Village.
Our core group of volunteers is made up of West Village families who want to create and maintain a sense of community with Bleecker Playground at the heart of it.

Friends of Bleecker Playground has worked hard, here are a few of our accomplishments:

Annual Family Events

  • Revived the West Village Halloween Festival
  • Organized the Holiday Tree Lighting
  • Established a Spring Family Day
  • Organized free musical park performances
  • Sponsored a New Parent Breakfast
Park Improvements
  • Replaced sand in the sand box
  • Got additional trash pick-ups during summer months
  • Added safety signs
  • Reestablished the garden area around the sand box
  • Got a new tree planted by the swings
Fund Raising
  • Received a $400,000 grant from Speaker Quinn's office for bathroom renovations (beginning Fall 2009)
  • Raised private funds to reestablish the garden area around the sand pit, dedicated as "Grandma's Garden"
  • Year round fund raising for operating costs (includes all of the previously listed events and more...)

Future Projects
  • Clean and refurbish the anti-slip safety paint on the play structures (say no to chipped teeth!)
  • Establish private maintenance - for additional garbage and sand clean-up
  • Replace or refurbish the buckling-play-structure-safety-padding
  • Continue to periodically replace sand
  • Maintain the garden area, adding monthly rodent control, if necessary
